This is an original hand-colored mezzotint of a a young Bulgarian woman in the traditional costume of the period. It was engraved by Félix Mixelle and Lachaussée Jeune and is a drawing by Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur. It was published in 1801 in Paris.
This picture comes from a later edition of the encyclopedic work "Costumes civils actuels the tous les peuples connus, dessinés d'après nature, dug a coloriés. Accompagnés d'une notice historique sur les moeurs, usages, coutumes, religion, fêtes, supplices, FUNERAILLES, sciences a species, commerce, etc., the chaque peuple".
A loose translation of the title using my long forgotten college french is "All known peoples civilian clothing, designed by nature engraved and colored. Accompanied by a history of the country on dress, religion, festivals, funerals, sciences, commerce etc. of each peoples". Published in Paris about 1805.
Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was a etcher, drawer and writer. He wrote exotic novels as well as documentary works on various subjects. Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was fascinated by costumes. Born in Montreal in April 1757, Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur went to study in France after the conquest of New France by the British. He studied at Sainte-Barbe College in Paris and then embarked on a diplomatic career. He died in Paris in May 1810.
A mezzotint is a print made from an engraved copper or steel plate on which the surface has been partially roughened, for shading, and partially scraped smooth, giving light areas. The technique was much used in the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries for the reproduction of paintings.
This lovely mezzotint is in excellent condition. The colors are still strong. It is preserved and framed very well in an attractive gold frame which suits the style of the mezzotint very well.
The frame measures 11" x 8.75"

Yes, in most cases you will only pay shipping for the heaviest/largest item and additional items will be shipped free. When ordering multiple items please contact me so I can make an adjustment to the shipping charges. This can also be done in the form of a refund if you order before contacting me.
In most cases they are not. I negotiate each price and pass any savings on to the buyer when I list the item. However I have no problem with you asking me. I figure if I can negotiate when I purchase an item then I should not mind when someone negotiates with me. FYI I am usually more open to negotiations when the order is for multiple items.
